Located in the lobby of the Concord Residence Hall, the Campus Safety Department provides 24-hour, 7-day-a-week service and protection. The department utilizes foot, bicycle, and vehicular patrol to ensure highly visible coverage of the campus.
In addition to the director and chief, 20 full-time safety officers, including on-duty shift supervisors, make up the authorized force. The authority of campus safety officers is limited to the immediate and adjacent vicinity of university property. Officers do not carry weapons and do not have the power to arrest.
All safety officers are trained in basic criminal laws and procedures. In addition, they receive training and instruction in first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and automatic external defibrillation (AED). The Campus Safety Department works closely with the Delaware State Police, which has primary police jurisdiction for our campus. All matters brought to the Campus Safety Department's attention are investigated to determine appropriate action, and victims of possible crimes can report incidents to the state police. In the event of a crime involving violence, major property loss, or a felony, the department automatically contacts the state police.
